Game Fun

What is a game? A fun game is one that creates amusement for the players by balancing the players. Knowing the players often determines the best game. It's all about enjoying yourself through the journey of the game.

Age can determine how much fun a game will be. Where skill increases with age, what a child finds fun is different from what an adult would find fun. Adults, however, should not limit themselves to a single genre. Finding a fun game for kids is easier because their movements are often random. Adults who want to play a game can choose from a variety of options. There are so many types of games to choose from, how do you decide which is the best to play or what is the most enjoyable for all?

Finding the perfect game for everyone isn't always easy. It's like a game. Recognizing the many variables that affect game fun is a good start. Everyone is unique. They each have unique personalities, strengths and weaknesses, and preferences. This is why there are different types of fun. Achievement fun, which provides learning and problem-solving. Free Spirited fun provides exploration and discovery. Social fun involves fellowship (an example of this could be multiplayer games). Facilitated fun which includes narrative and progression and Unfacilitated fun which involves flow and sensation.

I have also looked into Nicole Lazzaro’s 4 Keys to Fun. The Easy fun provides exploration and creativity. Hard fun involves a challenge, People fun which is like social fun including competition or collaboration, and serious fun which gives a player meaning. This list of fun is something that I personally understand better because it is simplified,

No matter the game or the target audience, however, flow theory must be taken into consideration. The last reading discussed flow theory but in short, making a game doable for the player but adding in a bot of challenges can make the game fun. Avoid boredom by adding in challenges while avoiding frustration by guiding the player and making the tasks achievable. Giving the players rewards is also a good way to motivate them to continue the game. Another advantage of this type of fun is that it can provide learning. Games can develop one's skills in certain areas.
