Games Stories

A game story is the narrative of the game. Each game must have a beginning, middle and end.

We want our players to feel as though they are part of the story as much as possible. If the player can contribute to the story, do so. Show a part of the story where the player can't influence it in any way. Even when doing exposition, telling part of the story is the last option. So, Do, Show, and Tell are the order of priority here.

Writers are vital to a game's story, which many overlook. Many people will now agree. Not understanding game story, they wait until the story structure is set before hiring a writer.  Assembling the story requires the writer's involvement from the start.

The other half of the game's story puzzle: Writing isn't everything. A story's conflict is created by designers and programmed by programmer.

It's up to the writer to know all the details. All other team members must know the bare minimum of the information presented here. The development team must have a shared understanding of story. That way, we can make games that will blow away the previous generation.
